The Beauty of Learning

I love to learn. I like trying new things, challenging my brain and just learning something new for the sake of it. Knowledge doesn't need a purpose other than that I enjoy to aquire it. Just mastering a new skill or being able to remember a certain thing after studying fills me with joy. That's why I thought I'd share with you some of the things I am currently learning and/or practising. Not all of these stimutlate your brain but i went out of my comfort zone and tried some new stuff.

  • Memorising countries on a map. I realised that I don't remember shit from geology in school so I started to learn where which country is located on the map. I started with Europe which is where I live and at the moment I am doing Central and South America. I also have an app that asks me all countries in the world but I'm no good so far, except for European countries to be honest. If you want to try learning the map, there are many tests on the internet as well as some app which you can find easily.
  • Sewing by pattern. I made a bathrobe following a pattern with a little help from a friend, pictures will follow soon, i hope. I want to make a nightgown that goes with it when I finally find the time to sew for a few hours.
  • Memorising the periodic table. I used to know what Au or Se stand for because, wel, I had chemistry in school. Now, I hardly remember any of it and I don't like it. At all. So I'm currently practising that with yet another app.
  • Doing the splits and the bridge. Because I hate sports but I really need some exercise. And because I was able to do them both. I'm still kind of flexible but I want to be able to do them properly. I will link the videos which I use do the stretching exercises below!

What are you learning or practising at the moment?
Have a great day,

A Little Bag

I am in the process of bringing more structure into my life and one step is trying to figure out how I can carry things in my huge hand bag without having to search smaller things for ages. I have a walking pharmacy and a selfmade bag for my pens and pencils which didn't turn out great so I'm not showing you. What I do want to share is this little bag I made:

I made it from one of the patchwork fabric pieces I bought and just added a bit of lace. It's handsewn because I wanted to do some actual needlework for once, I sew most things with my Singer to be honest. Anyway, this little thing now sits in my walking pharmacy and contains some random things no sane person would carry around but we are all mad here, aren't we?

So this is what I keep in there:

  • Candy
  • Chewing gum
  • Salt
  • Sweetener in the little flower thingy

So, who the fuck carries sweetener around you'll ask. I do. From now on at least. I recently found out that the sweetener in uni contains lactose and as a vegan I really don't want to use that (and I don't really like sugar in my coffee...).
It's a regular little plastic bag but I didn't wnat to make it look like I carry around drugs so I put some washi tape around it to make it look more harmless. And hey, everything looks better with kitchy flower patterns, right?

Do you carry around any weird things?

Have a great day!

Carnival!

So remember that time of the year where I dress up? Well, it was that time of the year again! i love carnival, it's a great opportunity to be really creative and try out some costumes and make-up styles without any boundaries. it is actually socially acceptable to wear wigs and rhinestones, how could you not love that?!

For the first day I went as a zombie queen:

Yes, i might have overdone it with the fake blood.

Aaaand for the other days I went as Flora, goddess of bloom:

Unfortunately, I don't have any good pictures of the outfits but I tend to put the focus on the make-up anyway.
Do you like to dress up? As what/who?

Have a great day!

About Life, Stress and Illnesses

Hello all you wonderful people out there!
This will be a rather short entry for reasons I'll state further down, I hope that's alright with you.

On Friday (which means 3 days ago) me and my political group held a concert/event called Rock Against Racism in our hometown. Of course, this meant that we had to do a lot of planning, organising and heavy lifting to do. During the whole process I felt like I was doing less than my friends, I wrote less emails, had a shorter list of things I had to do and as I'm really small and kind of petite I am not much help when it comes to heavy lifting either. The day before the event we had to prepare the room we had rented which meant we had to get about 400 chairs out of and a bunch of concert equipment in. I felt really down the whole day (and the day after) because of an intense argument I had with my parents and those two things combined with being up the whole Friday, organising and then also hosting the event while it was 36-38°C outside everything was just too much:
On Saturday at 3AM I got an asthma attack while carrying heavy boxes with glass bottles. It was horrific as always and I was brought to the nearest hospital where I stayed over night. The next morning at 11:30AM I was allowed to go but unfortunately, 8 hours later I was back with a second attack. Luckily, the second one wasn't as severe as the first one but it was terrible nevertheless. I didn't have to stay in hospital, I was just advised to get some rest.

'Waking up in the hospital'-selfie

'Evening at the hospital'- selfie

(Yeah, I took pictures when I felt good again, I tried to distract myself)

Today I went to my doctor for a check-up and she thinks I got the attacks not because of the heavy lifting but because of the emotional stress which sounds very plausible. Sooo now I'm on pain killers (my lungs hurt a lot at the moment...) and tranquilisers that will hopefully calm me down and prevent my fear of getting another attack from crawling back up.  I try to focus on calming things like blogging, reading, watching TV series and sleeping of course and hopefully in a few days I'm gonna be back on track.

So, what do I want to achieve by this post? I think I want to say take care of yourself! No matter what's going on in your life, it's probably not worth your mental and physical health. Give 100%, not 120% and take your time to do nothing. Nothing at all. Also, treat people with kindness, you don't know how hard their day might have been. Forgive. Calm down. Relax. Be happy.
It's harder than you think.

Have a great day,
The Countess

About Social Networks and Stuff

Did I mention I'm addicted to the internet?
Well, I am.

I have a Facebook profile, 3 tumblr accounts, a Twitter (To be found here), an instagram account (the_countess_of_fairytales), a YouTube profile and this blog of course. I mostly use Facebook because I have a group of friends with whom I am in PM contact whenever we are awake. Actually, this goes for me and the internet in general:
If I'm not online, I sleep or have uni in one of those rooms that have neither windows (yup, seriously...) or an internet connection. Other than that I'm pretty much online all the time.  I don't actively browse the whole time but even when I'm with friends I tend to check my emails (of which I get about 91827634567831920 a day since I became an active member in the Green Youth) or post a quick tweet or instragram picture. For some it's annoying but most of my friends are the same and I honestly enjoy it.

The Count and I don't have much time together, we only see each other about once or twice a week so it's nice to stay in contact via Whatsapp or Facebook over the day to feel a little more connected. We just tell each other random little things that are happening or plans we have, what annoys us, what makes us laugh...

Of course, I also read all news on the internet, mostly The Independent, The Guardian, the TAZ (German) and the Kölner Stadt Anzeiger (KSTA, a Cologne based local paper) but also random articles of other papers when they appear on my Facebook feed for example. I try to stay updated but sometimes I tend to forget it because I get lost in the wonders of the mighty internet. I tought myself how to stitch via YouTube, I get my ukulele tabs from various websites, I send a gazillion mails a day, I read other peoples' blogs and watch their YouTube videos about art, make-up, veganism, politics, everyday life and I don't even know what. At the moment I try to get better in calligraphy and I googled some pictures as inspirations.

What about you? What's your opinion on using the internet a lot? What do you do most when you're online (I know, the internet is for porn but I don't want to hear about that, thanks ;) )? Would you sometimes like to change the amount of time you spend online? I certainly do but look what I'm doing at the moment^^

Have a great day,
The Countess

I Got Tagged!

The wonderful Fee from Scenes From The Cutting Floor and N. Finternis from Nebelviolet tagged me! Yay and thanks, I was abandoning this blog way too much again... Shame on me.

Rules:
  • Link back to the person who tagged you.
  • Tag 5 blogs with less than 200 followers.
  • Get them to tag more bloggers and keep this thing going.

5 things you need every day:

  1. Tea. I can't go without a nice cuppa in the morning. Or ten. I drink tea though the whole year and the whole day and I certainly don't want to miss this steaming goodness in my life.
  2. My netbook, Tinkerbell (yes, she has a name). Firstly, because it is my connection to the mighty internet, of course and therefore to the real world and the ones that are dear to me. Secondly, it has all my music on it. I only started buying CDs very recently, I know, stupid me but I'm poor and have to spend all my money on train tickets to visit my loved ones that I met on this cursed internet. thirdly, it's where I do my writing. I prefer writing with ink on paper but due to practical and environmental reasons I write almost everything on Tinks.
  3. My bed. My bed is my home within my home, my safe spot, my Tardis. It's where I sleep, write, think, love, eat, sew, get drunk and read.
  4. My creativity. I try to make something everyday and if it's only a stupid short piece of writing, something creative gets done everyday in these walls.
  5. My loved ones. My soul mates, my harbour, the ones that make my life oh so wonderful.

5 books you would recommend:

  1.  Kaitlin Moran- How To Be a Woman. This woman is a genius, she combines feminism and her critique on our patriatical world with wit and humour. It's addictive and simply hilarious.
  2. Oscar Wilde- The Happy Prince and Other Stories. it's Oscar bloody Wilde, do I have to say more?
  3. Mary Shelley- Frankenstein. It's less the story but the feminist approach that makes me love this book so much. We talked about it in uni in a class called Gothic Fiction and I don't even know where to start with my reasons of why it's a great book but let me try anyway: It's part of the first famous Gothic novels. It was written by Shelley when she was between 19 and 21! A woman in 1818 writing Gothic fiction!!!
  4. Ben Aaronovitch- The Rivers of London. Harry Potter meets Sherlock Holmes meets The Mighty Boosh. Very British, very weird and thus amazing!
  5. Charles Dickens- Oliver Twist. Take your time to read this and realise that you always have to fight for your rights or they will be taken away from you.

5 materialistic wishes for Christmas presents:

  1. I'd love to get a Deutschlandpass. It's a train ticket which gives you the possibility to travel through the whole of Germany for a month. The Count and I are planning to get one for the month of August, we have 10 cities on our list, I'm really excited to travel around for almost a month!
  2. A flat in Cologne for the Count and me with room for a cat from the shelter
  3. A fuckload of money for more train tickets, my friends live all across the country and I miss them so very much.
  4. A new laptop (sorry, Tinks), this one is heating up way too much and not doing anything she's supposed to do... Opening a document takes at least three minutes in which you can't do anything else and Youtube is quite a hard task for poor old Tinkerbell.
  5. A camera as I only have my mobile phone to take pictures.

5 places you wish to visit:

  1. London, again. I miss London, my friend Sonja and I are planning to go there in October, i really hope it's going to happen!
  2. Barcelona because a dear friend of mine lives there. At the moment she is studying here in Germany but she'll go back soon and Barcelona is supposed to be beautiful.
Hamburg, Hamburg, always Hamburg. I've been there loads of times, it's where my friend and I always meet and I can't wait to go back in the beginning of August!
  3.  Iceland because it's beautiful.
Sweden for the very same reason.
  4.  Ireland because it's my dream country.
5 Adjectives that describe you:
  1. Creative.
  2. Illogical.
  3. Smart. (Sonja called me "wise" today, I wouldn't go that far but it was a nice thing to hear)
  4. Patronising.
  5. Well read.
5 things you'd say to people about life:
  1. If you have no kind words to say, you should say nothing at all. This is actually a quote by The Maccabees.
  2. In the end, when you look back, it's not about what's listed in your CV and what you have done but about how happy you were.
  3. Before you set out to change the world, go through your own house.
  4. Don't judge a book by its cover or a person by their heritage/sex/gender/clothes/dress size/age/....
  5. It's only money.
People tagged:

Ugh, this is hard... I don't follow that many people, I have no clue who has already done this and I don't know the number of followers in every case so uhm...

  1. Laura Morrigan
  2. Goldkind
  3. Beyond The Veil
  4. Phoenix
  5. HajaMiel

Okaaay, done! I really enjoyed doing this survey, thanks a lot for tagging me!
Have a great day,

Make Something Every Day

I found this on tumblr and I think it's very inspiring.

Even if you have terrible menstrual cramps.
So yeah, I tried making things anyway:
Today I wrote a short story, finished a chapter of a multi-chaptered story, did some embroidery and knitted. It wasn't distracting but at least it kept me busy.
What do you do to distract yourself?

Have a great day,

A feminist Opinion on Wearing Head Scarves

I've been a feminist for as long as I can make conscious decisions. And now I think it's time to speak up. I don't want to hear another word about muslim women being less feminist than I. Or anybody else for that matter.
I believe in equal rights.
I believe in freedom of thought.
And I believe in respect.
What I don't believe in is bashing a religion or an opinion with the excuse of being feminist.

I have been an atheist for as long as I can think and I personally am sick of hearing muslim women who decide to wear a head scarf/modest clothing/whatever are any less feminist than me.

I know what you might think:
A religion that tells women to cover up CAN'T be feminist. What you forget is that the women who wear head scarfs, niqabs or burqu DECIDE to do so and telling them they are less feminist by covering up makes you nothing but a hypocrite. Why? Because you take away their freedom of choosing their religion and their clothes which means you take away their right of making a decision in general. You don't own their body, they do! Feminism is the radical idea that women are people. And people have thoughts, they have opinions, they make decisions. They can do whatever they want. I decide to wear nothing but black, somebody else might decide to wear modest clothing and a head scarf. If you argue against them, you argue against me.

One of the nicest conversations I ever had about hair was with a friend who wears a head scarf (Yes, I'm talking to you, M.!). Not for a second did I have the feeling that her decision of covering up separated her from me. We talk about clothes, we talk about comics, we talk about feminism and everything else that comes to our mind. Because her wearing a head scarf is about as much of a problem as me not wearing one.

Another wonderful incident happend at a green youth meeting. It was one of my first big ones, I was really nervous and I didn't know anyone. I got in contact with a very nice girl wearing a head scarf and she complimented my (very short) black lace-y dress. She didn't judge me, she didn't force her opinion on me. Instead she made me feel accepted and welcome.
Now I ask you: When was the last time you complimented someone's head scarf?

Shouldn't we focus on what unites us instead of focusing on what makes us different? We all fight for the same cause: Equal rights for everyone. And that means the right to make a decision even if it isn't considered popular. So do whatever the fuck you want! Shave your head! Grow your hair out! Dye it blue or pink or black! Wear a head scarf! And finally: Be happy with yourself!

Have a great day,
The Countess

A Reintroduction

Hello, I'm The Countess and I'm a lazy shit.
And now don't tell me I'm not. I haven't done a blogpost in ages and I have absolutely no excuse than:

  • I was too lazy.
  • I didn't feel like blogging.
  • Nothing interesting happend in my life.
It's only so long that you can keep on blogging about random stuff in your life and your room until you're simply left with no new topics that you consider intersting enough to talk about. But then the wonderful HajaMiel sent me a comment a few days ago asking if I was okay and I remembered how much I like being here on Blogger and read her and other's post and I thought (and yes, that's a very egocentric and arrogant thought): If I miss them, maybe they miss me.
So here I am. I'm back. Officially. Cake and wine for everyone! Come in, have a seat, let's talk, drink and celebrate.

But how do I start?
Well, I can't really invite you to my home to have a cake and wine party with you but what I can do is at least show you my home. My room that is because yup, 22 years old, still living at home.

The chandelier is hanging pretty low, at least for normal seized people. I'm 1,58m and I have about 2cm until I hit it.

In those boxes I keep all my hair accessoires. I need more. Boxes, not accessoires.

This is where the magic happens

I love the couch, my dad built it. He also made the picture/lamp thingy.

Okay, so, that's it, really. That's my castle. I like it.

Have a great day,
The Countess

It's Just What All Young Lovers Do

The Count and I have never done something for Valentines Day before. We don't believe in showing you care about someone on a special day and we also don't like flowers and cheesy cards. Today though, today was different. We did the cheesiest thing a couple can do in Cologne. We hung a love padlock on the Hohenzollernbrücke which is one of the bridges that cross the Rhine. It is the one closest to the cathedrale and the most famous place in Germany to put love padlocks. Right now, there are over 40.000 padlocks on the bridge, they have become a tourist magnet and a very popular photo motive.
Many padlocks are engraved or signed but we decided to go for a simple cheap padlock, we're not THAT cheesy.

It is a tradition to throw the keys into the Rhine but I think a lock is something that should open all the time, even if it is just to replace it with a nicer one. Also, it's not exactly ecological to just throw your trash into random rivers so we each kept one of the keys.

Have a geat day,
The Countess

The Boyfriend Tag

It is Valentines Day and this year I'm giving in to society who constructed this unnecessary holiday. I have never really celebrated Valentines Day, I never recieved a Valentines gift or a card and I have never been on a Velentines date. I don't do dates.
Well, this year is different. This year The Count "agreed" to do the boyfriend tag for this blog because he is awesome and because I forced him.

So here we go. Everything in italics are comments by me.

She is sitting in front of the TV what is on the screen?
-The DVD standby screen 'cause she's probably asleep... again.

You are out to eat what kind of dressing does she get on her salad?
-Try again later

Vinegar

What is one food she doesn't like?
-She's supposed to not like broccoli.

Brokkoli is awesome though. I don't eat animal products, I hate bananas, and a lot of other stuff.

You go out to eat and have a drink what does she order?
-Depends on her mood.

What size shoe does she wear?
-Dwarf size. I guess about 36 in a human measuring system.

It's something between a German 36 and 37. Pretty small.

If she was collecting anything what would it be?
-Stones. All kind of stones. Green ones, blue ones, some are interesting (stone from the Vesuvius), some are not so much.

Also postcards, DVDs and entrance tickets for basically everything.

What is her favorite type of sandwich?
-None

We are not as sandwich obsessed here in Germany as people in the English speaking world, I guess, even though we are the bread nation.

What would this person eat everyday if she could?
-Quite a hard one. I'm gonna go with sushi here.

What is her favourite cereal?
-Does she eat cereals?! O.o

Not really, no.

What's her favourite music?
-Schandmaul, Fall Out Boy, Fiddlers Green, Voltaire

My very favourite band is My Chemical Romance, the rest was quite right. I also like Flogging Molly, Amanda Palmer, The Maccabees and some German bands.

What's her favourite sports team?
-Pixy Rugby team of Scotland.

I hate that he is way funnier than me. No, I actually love it, I just don't tend to admit it.

What's her eye colour?
-Brown-greenish.

Who's her best friend?
-She calls her Pfogel afaIk.

Pfogel is my nickname for Alex who is indeed my best friend.

What is something you do that she wishes you wouldn't?
-Making fun of her?

Eating meat!

What's her heritage/where she's from?
-Faery

Which is the land of the fairies.

You bake her a cake for her birthday, what kind of cake is it?
-Awesome cupcakes with extremely awesome icing.

Yay!

Did she play any sports?
-She sais ballet. Your choice whether this counts as a sport.

It does!

What could she spend hours doing?
-Many things. Reading, sleeping, eating, talking, singing, sewing.

Nailed it. Also, wasting time on the internet (Tumblr, Youtube, Facebook, fanfiction archieves, Blogger...) and writing.

What is one unique talent she has?
-She can be very enthusiastic about many things.

Aww, thanks. He sometimes hates it.

Okay, so basically The Count is awesome and I'm pretty lucky to have him.

Happy Valentines Day everyone!

Thoughts On Our Generation. A Poem. Sort of.

I gave up writing poems a long time ago but after reading a lot about Ginsberg and the Beat Generation I thought I could at least write down all the little pieces that come to my mind at random points.
I don't consider this real poetry, it is really just unarticulated thoughts but this is my blog and I'll post it anyway. Here we go. Enjoy.

A generation of artists and free spirits
Fingers stained with oil and ink and paint
Heads leaking and bursting,
Creativity dripping out when all we really need is logic, arthmetic and oh, so many grammar rules
A generation without Einsteins and Kants but with a fuckload of Ginsbergs and Morans and Palmers
What we have in vision we lack in discipline
I wouldn't want it any other way

People mentioned: Allen Ginsberg, Caitlin Moran, Amanda Palmer

Have a great day!

Visiting the Storybook Museum

I love fairytales. They remind me of my childhood, of long gone times, of what-ifs and of the sheer believe that everything will end well in some weird and twisted sort of way. I can get lost in stories about witches, dwarfs and magic, even though I am almost 22 years old now. The origins of fairytales fascinate me, too, I love to learn about how they have changed over time.

When I heard the local storybook museum had an art exhibition on the Grimm Brothers my little Countess of Fairytales heart jumped a bit. Now, my dear friend Vivi and I finally had the time to go visit the museum and believe me, we had the best of times! The exhibition featured only pictures, almost no texts with information were given as th museum wants to make sure it directs its exhibitions at all ages but the shown art was amazing and inspiring!
I do not think that I have ever seen so many different versions of princesses and bad wolfs (Doctor Who reference ftw!) and they had books with the most common and the most strange fairytales lying around for everyone to read them. On the second floor the museum has a huge room full of children's books from fairytales to Pippi Longstockings and the Very Hungry Caterpillar.

I didn't take any photos of the books and pictures because I wasn't sure if that was allowed but here is evidence of what happens to you when you read fairytales for too long:

The Countess of Fairytales on her throne

I call it The Bat

"To my consternation I have heard that there are people who have never seen a leprechaun. I am sure something is wrong with their eyesight."

Stories for children and those who love children
Do you like fairtales? Which is your personal favourite?

New Year's Resolutions

  • Eat healthier, try to include more veggies and fruits in my diet. My father calls me the vegan that doesn't eat vegetables, I want to change that.
  • Practise juggling on a regular basis again.
  • Sew more.
  • Try to use the car less often.
  • Buy more fairtrade and bio products.
  • Treat my hair better. I had it cut a few days ago, I lost almost 15cm :'( Now it looks really nice and healthy again and I want to keep it in that condition. Maybe I'll do a post just about my hair care routine...
  • Visit more museums, watch more movies, see more ballet and opera plays et cetera.
  • Spend as much time with friends as possible, maybe while doing the things mentioned above.
Have a very vry happy new year, I wish all of you the best!
Do you have any new year's resolutions?

Have a great day and year,
The Countess

Real life Stories

A while ago, the Count and I had this conversation:

The Count: " I know who Amanda Palmer is. She is in that band from Leipzig."
Me: "Um...no. You mean the Dresden Dolls."
He: "Leipzig, Dresden, what's the difference?"
Me: "They are not from Dresden, though..."
He. "But they call themselves Dresden Dolls!"
Me: "Dresden Dolls are really famous dolls that are produced in Dresden. The band used those dolls as their name inspiration."
He: "Hm..."
Me: "You really thought they (the band) were from Dresden, right?"
He: "No, I thought they were from Leipzig."

Some Everyday Pictures

I have realized that I have shown you a lot of photos from shootings or where I had just put on make-up, done my hair et cetera so i thought I'd show you some pictures of my in my real, honest everyday life. They're obviously less good than pictures where I look my best but I still kind of like them. Here we go!

Me at Mc Donald's, prettiest backround ever. Not.

It's getting cold...

This morning. I really need to clean that mirror...
Me and Albertus Magnus appreciating the first proper snow of the year at uni. Albertus Magnus is the statue, not the bike.

I am really excited about all the snow! I met some people from Spain at uni and they have never seen snow before. Can you believe that? They got really excited and infected me with their happiness :)

Have a great day,

Life Update and Creative Attempts

As I told you I am having a really stressful time at the moment but slowly everything is getting easier and better. My friends and my boyfriend are amazing, they always keep me in a good mood and are very supportive. Yesterday, the Count even came to an information stand we were having for the anti racism day next week, it made me really happy! This week was a good one, I got loads of things done and was even able to squeeze in some spare time activities.

On Tuesday I went to see Kafka's 'America' in a small rundown theater with my best friend, it was...strange. Strange but great. There were only four people on stage, 2 women and 2 men. They were dressed up as a mermaid, a show girl, a cowboy and a clwon in training trousers. Everyone except for the mermaid had dirt and smeared make-up all over them and those four played all the characters! often, more than one person played a character, they were speaking the same text at the same time and they constantly switched roles. There was singing and juggling and even magic tricks! It was awesome and definitely an evening I will never forget!
You can see some pictures on the website of the theater, I didn't take any. click me for pictures

In the evenings I did some crafting. It is nearly Christmas time and I love love love (!) Christmas so obviously I started working on my Christmas decorations:

Those ornaments will be part of my window decoation, along with other things. I am not really into traditional Christmas colours and motifs, my room is white, black, silver and pink so green and red would simply look terrible in there.

I also had to do something about my phone case. It was covered with a thin layer of black fake leather and now, after 8 months of living in my bag, it started to look really sad and damaged. I don't like spending a lot of money on something that is only there to cover my phone so i decided to get a little creative with the things I had lying around (aka a napkin).

And last but not least I made a candle!

It is completely made out of wax scraps from old candles, I only bought the jar. I like the idea of reusing things you wouldn't be able to use otherwise. I added a few drops of orange and patchouli oil ´to make the candle a little bit more special.

This is probably going to be a present for a dear friend of mine who likes selfmade stuff as much as I do.
I have this mad plan to make all of this years' presents myself... I don't have the time but who cares?! Most of them have to be ready at the 8th of December because my friends and I are having a Christmas meeting on that day and we are going to give each other our presents there already. It is a bit early but we are too many people with too many plans.

Do you like making or getting selfmade Christmas presents?

Have a great day,
The Countess.

PS: Blog post N° 100 and 40 followers, yay!
